The six most asked questions at Rossano’s Hair Salon

Rossa Danagher and his welcoming team want nothing more than a fabulous hair and beauty experience for their clients every time they come to the hair salon.  At Rossano’s, they serve the best coffee in a friendly atmosphere and with trained professional staff to ensure that you get just that.   Having your hair done is not just about the pampering, the indulgence and the ultimate transformation.  (Though, all that is pretty cool).  It is also the chance to ask skilled and enthusiastic hair stylists for advice and tips on hair care.  Rossa and the team are more than pleased to share their wealth of knowledge on trends in styling, on colour and on the general health of your hair.

Here are six of the more frequently asked questions.

How often should I wash my hair?

It is entirely a personal choice, depending on hair type and lifestyle.  While there is no need to wash your hair every day, everyone is different and so, if your roots get oily quickly, you might feel better doing just that.  Ask your stylist about your own texture and get advice on products. Not washing your hair does not regulate oil levels. Oil production is constant whether you wash daily or weekly and a build-up of oil can cause dandruff, and is not your best look.  Lather up as you like lads and ladies.

Is it true that your hair gets used to a shampoo and you should change brands every few months?

Nope!  Hair does not ‘get used’ to shampoo.  It is more likely that your hair needs change over time and, particularly in the case of chemically treated hair, you may need a new recipe or formula.  Our hair can often reflect our general health and changes occur naturally. Your stylist can direct you to the best products, shampoos, conditioners and masks to bring out the best in your hair. Plus, new products are being launched all the time, and some of these have amazing results. Be open to the new but you can hang on to the old favourites too.

How can I maintain my colour between salon appointments?

Use a shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair, or check with your stylist.  Retouching the roots between hair salon visits with a box hair colour is not recommended, as the chemicals can react badly to the ones already used by your stylist. If you do feel the need for a bit of a home touch up,  ask any Rossano staff  which products can help you along your way, a coloured conditioner for example may be just what is needed.   Avoid mixing chemical products for home perm or colour treatments as they’re formulated to work at an appropriate pH and strength and it’s a false economy for many clients, who need ‘repair’ appointments. If in doubt, leave it to the professionals. It is your crowning glory after all.

I am trying to grow my hair, should I get it trimmed?

Cutting the ends of your hair doesn’t affect the follicles in your scalp and those follicles determine how fast and how much your hair grows. Hair growth depends very much on general health. The main mineral associated with hair growth is zinc so a supplement may encourage hair growth.  It’s also important to consume sufficient protein   and not eating enough can affect hair growth. Meat, tofu, chickpeas, soy and beans are good sources of protein.  Trimming split ends can help too as if have developed split ends and even as your hair is growing, it will keep breaking off in the same spot. You’ll see your roots coming out from the top but you won’t notice your hair getting longer because it’s too weak to support the weight of its own length. In this instance, a good trim promotes growth.

Is blow drying your hair bad?

Heat causes damage. Blow drying causes a “flash drying” effect that not only removes the surface moisture but also removes water that is bound to the hair, which is called water of hydration. The effect of this flash drying is that the cuticles become dry, rigid and brittle. Minimize the damage by using an attachment, a nozzle and a diffuser. Adjust the heat for your hair type.  Fine hair will heat more quickly, for example. Invest in a heat protection product or ask your stylist to recommend something to combat any damage.
